The Truth About Pregnancy Nutrition + Eating for Lifelong Health with Torie Hall and Eric Wolfinger

What you eat can shape how anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed you feel. That's the heart of this week's episode of the Be Well by Kelly podcast.

I sat down with functional nutritionist Torie Borrelli Hall and James Beard Award–winning photographer Eric Wolfinger to talk about their new cookbook, Eating for Life: A Holistic Cookbook for Pregnancy and a Thriving Family. We covered the link between food and mood, how to balance blood sugar with protein, and how to get key prenatal nutrients from real food. Most of all, we talked about making food something you enjoy, not something that stresses you out.

Meet Torie Borrelli Hall and Eric Wolfinger

Torie Borrelli Hall is a functional nutritionist based in San Diego. Her work centers on helping women and families nourish themselves through pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond, using real, whole foods.

Eric Wolfinger is a James Beard Award–winning food photographer and chef, and a San Diego native. At home, he describes himself as a short-order cook for his partner and their two kids.

Their partnership started with breakfast. Years ago, Torie noticed Eric's blood sugar was all over the place and suggested he change his morning meal. The shift made enough of a difference in his energy and mood that the people around him thanked her. That conversation eventually grew into a cookbook.

About the Eating for Life Cookbook

Eating for Life is a holistic cookbook for pregnancy, postpartum, and the whole family. It features 120 recipes, each one photographed and tested by home cooks, paired with practical, evidence-based nutrition guidance.

This is not a book of sad smoothies. You'll find carbonara, lasagna, steak, and chocolate mousse alongside breakfasts, snacks, and sweets. The recipes are built around nutrient-rich ingredients that often go missing from modern family meals, like protein, egg yolks, fish, shellfish, organ meats, and collagen.

Honestly, this is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks. I would happily cook every single recipe in it.

Food should be a pleasure, not another source of stress. Torie and Eric focus on meals you genuinely look forward to, with plenty of variety in both foods and nutrients. Variety matters for more than flavor. Eating a wider range of foods gives your body a wider range of nutrients. And when you enjoy what you're eating, healthy habits are far easier to keep.
