Healthy Homemade Animal Style Fries | In-N-Out Copy Cat Recipe

When you’ve got a house full of animals begging for In-N-Out on the regular… this is your next move.

As a mom and a nutritionist, I’m always on the lookout for ways to recreate family favorites at home—meals that feel fun and satisfying, but that also keep our energy steady and our blood sugar balanced. That’s exactly why I love this recipe. These homemade Animal Style Fries take everything we crave from the fast-food original—crispy fries, caramelized onions, savory beef, and creamy special sauce—and reimagine it with real, nourishing ingredients and a blood sugar-supportive twist.

It’s comfort food, upgraded.
And the best part? You’re in control of what goes on the plate.

Whether it’s a fun Friday night dinner, a game-day snack, or something your kids can help make (and actually get excited about), this recipe is always a hit in our house. My boys love helping me plate up the Fab Four—protein, fat, fiber, and greens—and I love that it’s a moment to teach them how to build a balanced meal, even when we’re indulging a little.

The Fab Four Breakdown

This simple framework helps turn any meal into one that supports more stable blood sugar and longer-lasting energy. Here's how this one stacks up:

  • Protein – Ground beef crumbles deliver high-quality protein to help regulate hunger and keep you full longer.
  • Fat – The homemade special sauce, made with Primal Kitchen avocado oil mayo, provides healthy fats to slow digestion and support satiety.
  • Fiber + Greens – Use russet or sweet potatoes with the skin for extra fiber, and pair with a leafy green salad or add chopped romaine for crunch and volume.
  • Fun Carbs – Potatoes are a satisfying source of carbohydrates—and when balanced with protein, fat, and fiber, they won’t spike blood sugar the same way they would on their own.

A Better Fry Base: Jesse & Ben's Seed Oil-Free Fries

To keep things easy and clean, I love using Jesse & Ben’s oven-ready fries as the base. They’re made with just three ingredients—organic potatoes, avocado oil, and sea salt—and crisp up beautifully in the oven. Best of all, there’s no seed oil in sight.

If you’re trying to avoid inflammatory oils but still want fries that taste like the real deal, this is the move. Just 20 minutes in the oven at 425°F and you're golden.
Why I Love This Recipe

This dish checks all the boxes for me:

  • Family-approved
  • Fab Four balanced
  • Easy to make (especially with store-bought fries)
  • Fun for the kids to help build and plate

It’s flavorful, flexible, and doesn’t come with the blood sugar crash. That’s what makes recreating favorites at home so worth it—you get to enjoy the nostalgia and satisfaction, while still feeling your best afterward.

Ingredients

For the fries:

  • 1 bag Jesse & Ben's seed oil-free fries (or 4 medium russet/sweet potatoes, cut into thin fries)
  • Avocado oil, if using homemade fries
  • Sea salt + pepper, to taste

For the ground beef:

  • ½ yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 lb grass-fed ground beef
  • Sea salt, to taste

For the special sauce:

  • ¼ cup Primal Kitchen avocado oil mayo
  • ¼ cup ketchup (look for one with no added sugar if preferred)
  • 2 tablespoons mustard
  • 1 tablespoon pickle relish (or finely chopped pickles)

Optional toppings:

  • Shredded cheese
  • Shredded lettuce or chopped greens
  • Chives or scallions
  • Pickled jalapeños
  • Crushed roasted peanuts or sesame seeds for crunch

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F. Roast Jesse & Ben's fries according to package directions (about 20 minutes), flipping halfway for even crisping. If using homemade fries, toss in avocado oil, season, and roast as above.
  2. In a skillet, sauté chopped onions over medium-low heat until deeply caramelized, about 5–7 minutes. Add ground beef and cook until browned and crumbled. Season with salt to taste.
  3. In a bowl, mix mayo, ketchup, mustard, and relish until smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  4. Layer fries on a large serving plate. Top with beef and onions, then drizzle with special sauce. Add any optional toppings to finish.
